Every great competition begins with a first champion. In Rwanda’s university football history, that honour now belongs to Mount Kigali University -Rwanda (MKUR).
MKUR has been crowned the inaugural Rwanda Varsity League Football Champions (2025–2026) after a commanding 3-0 victory over East African University Rwanda (EAUR) in the national final played at Kamena Stadium, Huye, on Sunday, 28 June 2026.
The final, organised by the Rwanda National Students’ Association (RNSA-Intagamburuzwa), marked the culmination of the country’s first-ever national varsity football league, bringing together the best university teams from across Rwanda in a landmark competition that signals a new era for university sport.
For MKUR, the title was more than a trophy, it was the reward for a season that bordered on perfection. The university marched through the competition unbeaten, winning every match except for one group-stage draw against EAUR. When the two sides met again in the final, MKUR left no room for doubt, producing a dominant 3-0 performance to become the first name engraved on the league’s trophy.
Like a team writing its own script, MKUR blended flair with discipline, resilience with composure, and ambition with teamwork. Match after match, the players displayed attacking brilliance while standing firm at the back, proving that championships are built not only on talent but also on unity, preparation and belief.
Speaking after the historic triumph, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia described the victory as a defining moment for the university. “To become the first champions of Rwanda’s Varsity Football League is a proud milestone for our university. This achievement reflects our commitment to developing graduates who excel both academically and beyond the classroom. We congratulate our players, coaches and supporters for making history and setting a standard of excellence that will inspire generations to come.”
The Head Coach praised the players’ commitment throughout the campaign. “History remembers the first champions, and our players earned that place through discipline, sacrifice and teamwork. Going through the inaugural league unbeaten and finishing with such a convincing victory is something this team will always be proud of. We are grateful for the unwavering support from the university leadership and the entire MKUR community.”
As celebrations continue across campus, the victory stands as more than a sporting success. It is the opening chapter of a legacy. Years from now, when Rwanda’s varsity football story is told, the first champions will always be remembered.
With the national crown secured, MKUR now turns its sights to the regional stage, carrying not only a trophy but the pride of an entire university community.
