Mount Kigali University alumni support nursing students and vulnerable patients at Masaka Hospital

The Mount Kenya University Rwanda (now turned Mount Kigali University) Alumni Association has reaffirmed its commitment to student mentorship and community service by supporting nursing students on clinical placement and assisting vulnerable patients during a visit to Masaka Hospital.

The outreach brought together members of the Alumni Association and the university’s Nursing Department, creating an opportunity for graduates to mentor students while extending humanitarian support to patients facing financial hardship.

Addressing the nursing students, James Mugume, President of the Mount Kigali University Alumni Association, encouraged them to approach their clinical training with professionalism, integrity, and a willingness to learn.

“Clinical placement is where theory meets practice. This is your opportunity to develop the competence, compassion, and professionalism that define outstanding healthcare professionals. As ambassadors of Mount Kigali University, let your conduct reflect the values of excellence and service.”

Mugume urged the students to respect hospital regulations, collaborate with healthcare professionals, and make the most of every learning opportunity throughout their placement. He noted that the experience would play a significant role in shaping their future careers in the health sector.

Beyond mentoring students, the Alumni Association donated RWF 149,354 to clear outstanding medical bills for patients who could not afford the cost of treatment, allowing them to access discharge and continue their recovery.

Speaking during the donation, Mugume said the initiative reflects the association’s commitment to giving back to society.

“Our responsibility as alumni extends beyond supporting our alma mater. We also have a duty to stand with communities in times of need. By assisting these patients and encouraging our future healthcare professionals, we are investing in a healthier and more compassionate society.”

The initiative highlights the Alumni Association’s growing role in strengthening the link between graduates, current students, and the wider community through mentorship, philanthropy, and professional development.
