Mount Kigali University (MKU) strengthened its commitment to academic excellence by hosting an insightful guest lecture on Curriculum Development and Implementation, delivered by Dr. Flora Mutezigaju, Deputy Director General of the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB).
The session provided education students with practical insights into Rwanda’s curriculum reforms, highlighting the country’s transition from a knowledge-based curriculum to the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC), which focuses on developing learners’ skills, critical thinking, values and lifelong competencies. Dr. Mutezigaju also explained the curriculum development process, from stakeholder consultations and needs assessment to syllabus development, teacher training, piloting and nationwide implementation.
She further discussed key implementation challenges, including large class sizes, curriculum overload, limited teaching resources and teacher preparedness, while outlining ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the quality and relevance of education in Rwanda.
The lecture offered students valuable exposure to current education policies and practices, reinforcing MKU’s commitment to bridging theory and practice through industry engagement. By bringing experienced education leaders into the classroom, the University continues to equip future educators with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to contribute to the transformation of Rwanda’s education sector.
