Mount Kigali University’s commitment to experiential learning and community engagement continues to create meaningful impact as students pursuing a Master of Hospitality and Tourism Management undertake a practical capstone project aimed at strengthening service delivery among selected hospitality Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kicukiro District.
Implemented under the close guidance and mentorship of the University’s faculty team over the past three consecutive Sundays, the initiative demonstrates Mount Kigali University’s philosophy of transforming classroom knowledge into practical solutions that benefit both students and the wider community.
The training programme focused on three critical pillars of hospitality excellence, Service Excellence, Housekeeping, and Food Hygiene, equipping hospitality personnel with practical skills to deliver memorable guest experiences while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, professionalism, customer care, and food safety.
As part of the project, the master’s students also underwent intensive practical exposure in housekeeping operations, gaining hands-on experience in room preparation, hygiene management, quality assurance, and international hospitality standards before transferring these skills to employees from participating hospitality enterprises.
The initiative is designed not only to enhance service quality within hospitality SMEs but also to contribute to Rwanda’s growing tourism industry by promoting professional service standards. The food hygiene component further emphasized that healthy eating is healthy living, encouraging safe food handling practices that protect guests while enhancing confidence in hospitality establishments.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Martin Kimemia, Vice Chancellor of Mount Kigali University, said the project reflects the University’s commitment to producing graduates who create impact beyond the classroom. “At Mount Kigali University, we believe that higher education should create value beyond the classroom. By working directly with hospitality SMEs, our students are applying their knowledge to solve real industry challenges while contributing to national development. This practical, industry-driven approach equips our graduates with the competencies to become ethical leaders while supporting the continued growth of Rwanda’s hospitality and tourism sector.”
Dr. Paul Okumu, Dean of the School of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, noted that the capstone project is an important component of the master’s programme because it combines academic excellence with industry engagement and community service. “Our students are learning by doing. Through this capstone project, they are applying advanced hospitality concepts in real business environments while helping local enterprises improve service excellence, housekeeping standards, and food hygiene practices. This practical exposure develops competent professionals who understand that leadership in hospitality is measured by the positive impact they create in the communities they serve.”
For the students, the experience has been equally rewarding. One of the master’s students in Hospitality and Tourism Management described the project as one of the most enriching experiences of her academic journey. “The practical exposure to housekeeping and the opportunity to train hospitality employees have shown me the importance of attention to detail and excellent customer service. It is fulfilling to know that our learning is helping businesses improve while preparing us to become better hospitality professionals.”
