Our Story
About Mount Kigali University
Mount Kigali University began as Mount Kenya University Rwanda (MKUR), a campus of Mount Kenya University in Kenya that opened its doors in Rwanda in 2010. In April 2023, following a cabinet resolution chaired by His Excellency President Paul Kagame, the institution was chartered by the Government of Rwanda and took on its current name.
The new name reflects the country’s pride in Mount Kigali, while the University retains everything that comes with being a chartered, autonomous institution operating under the Rwanda Qualifications Framework and the laws governing higher education in Rwanda: high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, modern infrastructure, strong faculty, an internationally connected education, scholarships, and a track record of graduate employability. University ownership has not changed.
Over time, the University has steadily expanded its academic infrastructure — its facilities in Health Sciences and Hospitality now rank among the strongest of their kind in the region. MKU offers a wide range of academic and professional programmes through flexible modes of study, including online, face-to-face, day and weekend, and institution-based learning.
