Mount Kigali University (MKU) continues to demonstrate its commitment to producing industry-ready graduates by providing students with practical learning experiences that bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice. In line with this commitment, the Department of Journalism, Film and Communication, led by Head of Department Mr. Festus Irungu, partnered with Cameras Africa Rwanda to organize a hands-on Photography Workshop for students pursuing Film Production and Animation.

For many students pursuing film production and animation studies, the workshop was more than a technical training session, it was an opportunity to discover the real-world possibilities that photography and visual media offer. Through interactive demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants gained a deeper understanding of photography as both an art form and a powerful communication tool.

Harerimana Wanjye, a second year student in film, described the experience as transformative and highly informative. “The camera workshop began by teaching us the fundamentals of photography, including what photography is and its role in society. We were also introduced to key photography principles such as framing, symmetry, negative space, and other important guidelines,” he explained.

Beyond learning the technical foundations, students were encouraged to think about photography as a profession and a vehicle for social impact. They were introduced to opportunities available through Cameras Africa Rwanda, including mentorship, project support, and access to equipment for promising initiatives. “The facilitators explained that if we have a photography project but lack funding, we can approach them for support. After reviewing the project, they may provide financial assistance and equipment,” added Harerimana.

The exposure to industry practitioners gave students valuable insight into the realities of the creative sector and the support networks available to emerging professionals. Participants also appreciated learning directly from experts who shared practical experiences from the field.

Another student participant reflected on the workshop’s impact, saying: “This workshop has changed the way I look at photography. I now understand that every image can tell a story and communicate a message beyond what is visible.” The workshop reinforced the importance of creativity, technical competence, and critical thinking, skills that are increasingly essential in today’s digital and media-driven world. By connecting students with industry professionals and exposing them to current trends, technologies, and career pathways, Mount Kigali University continues to create meaningful learning experiences that prepare graduates to excel in the competitive creative economy.

This initiative exemplifies the University’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and industry engagement, ensuring that students graduate not only with theoretical knowledge but also with the confidence, practical exposure, and professional networks required for success in the workplace.
