Mount Kigali University launches professional mediation certification program

In a groundbreaking move for dispute resolution in Rwanda, Mount Kigali University, through its Institute of International and Development Law (IIDLAW), the MKU Institute of Conflict and Business Studies (MKU-ICB), and the School of Law, in partnership with Suluhu Mediation Center, is set to launch Professional Mediation Certification Program (CPM).

The intensive five-day, 40-hour hybrid program, scheduled from March 16–20, 2026, at Kigali Paramount Hotel, is designed to equip participants with practical mediation, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills. The training will combine three days of in-person sessions with two days of virtual learning, ensuring a comprehensive approach to professional mediation.

Grounded in Rwanda’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and justice framework, the program is practice-focused, featuring guided mediation simulations, ethical considerations, negotiation strategies, and process design exercises. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a professional certification in mediation.

This unique program is open to a wide range of professionals, including legal practitioners, judiciary officers, government and corporate professionals, NGO staff, ADR practitioners, academics, and students, offering a rare opportunity to join Rwanda’s growing community of certified mediators.

Interested participants are encouraged to take advantage of the Early Bird rate of RWF 450,000, available until March 9, 2026, after which the standard fee of RWF 475,000 applies. With a limited intake of 35 participants, spots are expected to fill quickly.

MKU and its partners emphasize that the program is not just theoretical but hands-on, providing participants with real-world mediation skills they can immediately apply in professional and community settings.

This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Rwanda’s dispute resolution capacity and reflects MKU’s commitment to promoting professional development and the rule of law in the country.
