Mount Kigali University charts a bold digital future with AI, digitization and robotics strategy

Mount Kigali University has taken a decisive leap into the future of higher education by rolling out a comprehensive Digitization, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Robotics Strategy Initiative, marking a major milestone in the institution’s transformation agenda.

Over the course of three intensive and highly interactive days, both administrative and academic teams are participating in structured capacity-building sessions aimed at rethinking how technology can reshape university governance, teaching, learning, and service delivery.

The training focused on key pillars critical to modern universities, including the use of AI in higher education, strategic SLOC analysis and gap identification, ICT infrastructure and computer laboratory assessment, and high-level engagements with the university’s ICT team. The sessions were designed not only to build skills, but also to align institutional systems with global digital education standards.

The initiative was facilitated by renowned experts Elena Mwai and Dr. David Odera, whose hands-on approach will encourage critical thinking, innovation, and practical application of digital tools within the university context.

Speaking about the training, the University Vice Chancellor, Dr. Martin Kimemia, emphasized that embracing digital transformation is no longer a choice but a responsibility for institutions of higher learning.

“The future of higher education is undeniably leaning towards digitalization. At Mount Kigali University, we are making a deliberate decision to invest in smart systems, data-driven decision-making, and innovation-led teaching. This initiative is about building an institution that is relevant, competitive, and responsive to the demands of the 21st century,” Dr. Kimemia said.

He further noted that the strategy is closely aligned with the university’s long-term vision of producing graduates who are not only academically grounded but also technologically competent and adaptable.

“Our goal is to produce future-ready graduates, graduates who can work with AI, understand digital systems, and lead innovation in their respective fields. Digitization and robotics are not add-ons; they are core to the future we are building at Mount Kigali University,” he added.

Participants described the training as timely and transformative, highlighting how the sessions opened new perspectives on the integration of AI tools in teaching, research, assessment, and university management. The assessment of ICT infrastructure also laid the groundwork for targeted upgrades that will enhance learning environments and digital access for students.

The Digitization and AI Strategy Initiative signals Mount Kigali University’s strong commitment to smart governance, innovation-driven education, and sustainable institutional growth. As higher education institutions across Africa race to adapt to rapid technological change, Mount Kigali University positions itself not as a follower, but as a proactive builder of the future.
