Mount Kigali University (MKU), Rwanda, has made a major step towards strengthening early childhood education in Rwanda by funding the construction of Early Childhood Development (ECD) classrooms — one in Kigali and another outside the capital.
Speaking during the official handover of a cheque to the Imbuto Foundation, MKU Rwanda Founder Prof. Simon Gicharu said the initiative is part of the university’s enduring commitment to corporate social responsibility.
“This contribution is part of our ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility,” said Prof. Gicharu. “By contributing to the construction of the ECD Model Class, we are investing in the future of Rwanda’s children, providing them with the opportunity to receive quality education from the earliest stages of life.”

The donation was received by Imbuto Foundation Director General Elodie Shami, who applauded the university’s support and shared vision for transforming lives through education.
Prof. Gicharu emphasized that this contribution is only the beginning, stating, “We remain committed to supporting education and this contribution is only one part of our long-term strategy to make a lasting impact to the ECD model and look forward to more initiatives.”
Prof. Gicharu also lauded the Imbuto Foundation for its work in uplifting underprivileged children, particularly girls, by facilitating their access to education. He noted that the foundation’s efforts had borne fruits, citing examples of students who had successfully pursued higher education and entered professional careers.

“It is inspiring to witness the success of individuals supported by the Imbuto Foundation, such as a young woman who has completed her degree at Mount Kenya University and is now pursuing her master’s degree,” he said. “Her achievement is a testament to the foundation’s vital role in empowering the youth, especially girls, and giving them the tools to succeed.”
