Mount Kigali University equips student leaders with governance and leadership skills at induction retreat

Mount Kigali University organized a Student Leadership Induction and Capacity Building Retreat from 12th to 13th March 2026 at Paramount Hotel in Kigali. The retreat was organized and financed by the university through the Office of the Dean of Students as part of the institution’s commitment to strengthening student leadership and governance. The retreat provided an opportunity for student leaders to receive orientation, leadership training, and guidance on how to effectively perform their roles within the university community.

The retreat brought together 29 student leaders, including members of the Mount Kigali University Rwanda Students Association (MKURSA) Council, leaders of clubs and associations, and class representatives. These leaders play a vital role in representing students’ interests, promoting student welfare, and supporting the university in maintaining a positive learning environment. The retreat therefore aimed to equip them with leadership knowledge, practical skills, and ethical values necessary to serve responsibly.

The main objective of the retreat was to strengthen the capacity of student leaders so that they can effectively carry out their responsibilities. The retreat aimed to help student leaders better understand their roles within the student governance system and the broader structure of the university. It also focused on promoting ethical leadership, accountability, and professionalism in student leadership positions.

Additionally, the retreat sought to improve communication and collaboration between student leaders and university management. Participants were also trained on essential leadership competencies such as decision-making, conflict resolution, time management, and teamwork. Through these objectives, the university aimed to build a group of student leaders who are committed to unity, inclusiveness, and positive engagement within the university community.

A total of 29 students Participated

The retreat was attended by a total of 29 student leaders drawn from different student leadership structures within the university. The participants included members of the Mount Kigali University Rwanda Students Association (MKURSA) Council, leaders of various student clubs and associations, and class representatives from different academic programs.

These participants represent the voice of students within the university and play a significant role in bridging communication between students and university administration. Their participation in the retreat enabled them to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and build stronger collaboration across different student leadership groups.

 Resource Persons and Facilitators

The retreat benefited from the participation of experienced facilitators and guest speakers who the retreat benefited from the contributions of several experienced resource persons who shared their expertise and practical insights on leadership and youth engagement. Dr. Pascal Hakiza Kizungu, African Youth Leadership Forum Country Coordinator, highlighted the importance of youth leadership and civic responsibility, while Mr. Thomas Mwesigye, representing the National Youth Council for Higher Learning Institutions, emphasized the role of student leaders in national youth development.

Additional sessions were facilitated by Mr. Samuel Sengiyumva (Field Engagement Officer, I-Lead Program), Mr. Abraham Famanou (Former MKURSA Minister of International Students, 2023–2024), Mr. Festus Irungu (Head of Department of Media, Journalism and Communication Studies), Dr. Okumu Paul (Dean, School of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management), and Mrs. Uwimana Lucie (Dean of Students).

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, John Nyiligira

The training was officially opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, John Nyiligira who encouraged participants to fully benefit from the retreat. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. MartinKimemia, also addressed the students, emphasizing leadership integrity and guiding them through the Student Leaders’ Pledge of Integrity and Service.

Activities and Key Highlights of the Retreat

The retreat was conducted over two days and focused on equipping student leaders with essential leadership knowledge and practical skills. The first day concentrated on the foundations of effective student leadership, where participants were introduced to key concepts such as leadership principles, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving. Discussions also emphasized the importance of balancing academic responsibilities with leadership roles while maintaining professionalism and accountability.

The second day focused on responsible leadership and future impact. Participants explored topics including accountability, transparency, ethical leadership, conflict resolution, and project planning for student activities. The sessions were interactive and allowed participants to engage in group discussions, share experiences, and analyze common leadership challenges within the university environment.

A key highlight of the retreat was the opportunity for student leaders to interact with university management, who provided guidance and shared expectations regarding responsible student leadership. Another important moment was the administration of the Student Leaders’ Pledge of Integrity and Service, where participants committed themselves to serving the university community with honesty, responsibility, and accountability. The retreat concluded with a certificate awarding ceremony, recognizing the active participation and commitment of the student leaders who attended the training.
