Mount Kigali University is making significant progress towards establishing itself as a world-class institution, as staff were urged to uphold the principles of policy, accountability, and quality by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia during the two-day Assurance Tools and Policy Training Seminar and Leadership Orientation, held on 12–13 June 2025 at Kigali Paramount Hotel.
Addressing both academic and non-academic personnel, Dr. Kimemia emphasised that the university’s trajectory towards international recognition is founded upon its policies and institutional discipline.
“We are not prepared to accept second or third place,” he stated. “Our ambition is to be the market leader in every facet of the higher education sector, ensuring that we deliver high-quality education and services to the students who entrust us with their futures.”
The training focused on Mount Kigali University’s principal operational pillars, including quality assurance, student welfare, academics, finance, research, and human resources, with the objective of ensuring that all staff members are fully aligned with the institution’s strategic vision.
“Experience in education is grounded in excellence in policy,” Dr. Kimemia observed. He further explained that policies serve as legal instruments protecting the institution, its officers, and the quality of education provided. “Operating within policy not only ensures security but, more importantly, contributes to delivering the academic experience our students rightfully expect and deserve.”
Contributing to the discussion, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Quality Assurance and Institutional Compliance, Dr. Nkechi Irechukwu, underscored the wider significance of training and policy.
“Quality assurance tools guide the university’s daily academic and administrative functions, ensuring that we consistently meet our objectives with excellence,” she remarked. Dr. Irechukwu stressed that policies apply uniformly across the entire institution, from senior management to the newest recruits, thereby establishing a shared framework of transparency and efficacy. She urged staff to expedite the implementation of these policies, as they underpin the university’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and institutional growth.
Mount Kigali University remains resolute in its commitment to becoming one of the top academic institutions within Rwanda, across Africa, and internationally, by cultivating an environment in which excellence in education and service delivery is paramount. Through ongoing staff development programmes, the university ensures that all personnel are sufficiently equipped with the requisite skills and knowledge to uphold and enhance its academic standards.
This dedication to continuous professional development and operational excellence is fully consistent with the standards prescribed by Rwanda’s Higher Education Council (HEC) and reflects the university’s aspiration to assume a leading role within the higher education sector.
