Mount Kigali University students win international film award

Mount Kigali University students have won an award at the International Students’ Film Festival in Nigeria for their compelling short film “Forgotten Frame”, which tells the emotional story of a child born with a disability who is initially rejected by his mother but later rises to fame.

The film’s moving narrative and powerful message about resilience and self-discovery earned the students top recognition at the International Students’ Film Festival held in Nigeria.

Forgotten Frame is about resilience and self-discovery

The project brought together over 40 students from Mount Kigali University, under the guidance of their mentor, Apollo Dusabimana O’Keefe, who is also the Secretary General of the Rwanda Film Association.

Forgotten Frame was written by Migambi Elite Alexis, who described winning the award as a huge source of motivation. “It’s a joy and a boost of confidence. To win a continental award on our first project is incredible. It inspires us to aim higher and create even more impactful stories,” Alexis said.

Nsabimana Elissa, who worked on the production, shared that he initially doubted the project’s ability to compete at an international level, but Dusabimana’s experience of over 20 years in the film industry convinced the students that no achievement was impossible.

The film drew strong reactions from the festival jury, with many visibly moved by its narrative. “The judges were brought to tears. Our film topped the competition because of the heartfelt message it carried,” explained Dusabimana.

In addition to international recognition, the project has opened doors for collaboration with Nigeria’s Nollywood film industry, allowing Mount Kigali University students to participate in training programs with Nigerian actors and filmmakers. Dusabimana highlighted that such partnerships are crucial for elevating the Rwandan film industry and nurturing local talent.

The production of Forgotten Frame took ten months and cost between 6 and 8.5 million Rwandan Francs, reflecting both the dedication and ambition of the students involved.

Mount Kigali University recently welcomed its first cohort of bachelor’s students in Film Production and Animation Studies, a move aimed at raising professional standards and fostering creativity within Rwanda’s film sector. Forgotten Frame stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers capable of competing on a global stage.
