Taste of Africa festival unites cultures through cuisine and performance

The Taste of Africa Festival, hosted by the School of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management at Mount Kigali University, brought a vibrant celebration of culture, cuisine, and performance to Kigali Paramount Hotel on March 28, 2026, drawing an energetic crowd eager to experience the richness of African heritage.

The event showcased a fusion of gastronomy and cultural expression under the theme of celebrating African flavors, traditions, and creativity. Attendees were treated to a diverse culinary display featuring traditional dishes from across the continent, highlighting both authenticity and innovation in African cuisine.

Beyond the food, the festival came alive through captivating performances that reflected the continent’s dynamic cultural identity. A standout moment was the electrifying rhumba performance delivered by students from the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose rhythms and stage presence infused the venue with excitement.

The atmosphere intensified as South Sudanese students presented a traditional dance, offering a glimpse into their rich cultural heritage through movement and music.

Adding to the spectacle was a performance by MKU’s renowned Imenagitero Cultural Dance Troupe, whose synchronized choreography and vibrant costumes embodied Rwanda’s cultural pride and artistic excellence. Their performance resonated strongly with the audience, reinforcing the importance of preserving and promoting local traditions.

The event also attracted key figures from Rwanda’s tourism sector, including Irène Murerwa from the Rwanda Development Board. Her presence underscored the growing significance of such cultural initiatives in promoting Rwanda as a hub for tourism and cultural exchange.

In her remarks, Irène Murerwa commended the university for organizing an event that aligns with Rwanda’s broader tourism and cultural promotion strategy.

“Events like the Taste of Africa Festival play a crucial role in showcasing the richness of our continent’s culture and cuisine. They contribute significantly to positioning Rwanda as a destination for cultural tourism,” she noted.

She also emphasized the importance of youth involvement in driving the future of the tourism industry.

“It is encouraging to see young people taking the lead in promoting African heritage. Their creativity and innovation are key to the continued growth and transformation of the tourism sector,” she added.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Paul Okumu, Dean of the School of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management, emphasized the importance of practical learning and cultural integration in shaping future industry professionals.

“The Taste of Africa Festival is more than a celebration it is a learning platform that allows our students to showcase their creativity, skills, and understanding of African hospitality. Events like this prepare them to compete on both regional and global stages,” he said.

Dr. Okumu further highlighted the role of such initiatives in strengthening cultural appreciation and unity among students from diverse backgrounds.
